From tigers, meerkats and snakes, to horses, dogs and tortoises, staff at Wave are using animals to help pupils build their self-confidence and manage their behaviour in the classroom. Research has shown that using animals in a therapeutic way can help reduce stress and anxiety for pupils, as well as increasing their confidence and motivation for learning. This can then lead to improved school attendance and enhanced relationships with fellow pupils and teachers.

Just a few days into the new school term, parents of pupils at Glendinning Academy are praising the positive impact of the school on their children - and everyone is loving Rory, the school鈥檚 trainee therapy dog.

Exciting plans to open a new special free school for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including those on the Autism spectrum, whose needs cannot be met within a mainstream school took a major step forward this week with a ground-breaking ceremony being held on the site.

Glendinning House will be run by the Wave Trust working closely with Devon County Council. Based in Newton Abbot, the school will provide 120 new school places for children and young people between the ages of 7 - 19 who would benefit from a special school environment because of barriers to learning, which include sensory processing needs and anxiety.

Today was a very special day for staff at Glendinning Academy, Wave鈥檚 new special free school for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as they welcomed their first 54 new pupils.

12 months ago Cornwall鈥檚 Wave Trust, recognised as the most successful trust in the country for providing education for pupils who have been excluded from school, took over the running of the Central Devon, North Devon and South and West Devon academies.

Today the three academies have new names: Stansfield Academy, The Shoreline Academy and the River Dart Academy, new principals and are celebrating a significant improvement in educational standards and exam results, improved teaching facilities and strong support from pupils and parents.

天美app (MAT), which provides high quality education for pupils in Devon and Cornwall, has officially become the new sponsor of Glendinning House Academy, a special free school due to open in Newton Abbot in September 2020. 天美app is a highly successful provider of education for children who are educated outside of mainstream school due to medical requirements or who access their education through alternative provision schools. Glendinning House will be the first special school within their Academy Trust family. The new school will benefit from the team鈥檚 breadth and depth of experience.
