Nine Maidens academy mainly supports the students from the Camborne, Redruth area and the Lizard peninsula. It is based near the village of Four Lanes and surrounded by rolling countryside. Nine Maidens is split into a secondary department and a primary department. Each pupil's programme is individualised and work is set at appropriate levels enabling all pupils to access the curriculum. It is one of the few academies in the country to be awarded the Dyslexia Friendly Schools Quality Mark and takes pride in the intervention programmes offered. Outdoor Learning is another unique strength of the academy which gives the pupils opportunities to learn in a creative manner away from the classroom. Pupils consider Nine Maidens to be a safe place to learn and that every day is a fresh start.

Curriculum

Our Curriculum at Nine Maidens

Our curriculum enables pupils to gain a rich variety of learning experiences. Underpinned by our Trust values, we aim to develop pupils' confidence, self belief and level of attainment. Each student's programme is individualised and work is set at appropriate levels enabling all students to access the curriculum. On entry, phase and subject specialist staff use their expertise to ascertain prior learning, any gaps in learning, and plan accordingly. In primary, pupils follow the National Curriculum for English, Maths and the International Primary Curriculum. We use the RWIncand Freshstart SSP programmes to support pupils to learn to read successfully and with fluency, as literacy and communication are a high priority. Nine Maidens is one of the few academies in the country to be awarded the Dyslexia Friendly Schools Quality Mark and takes pride in the intervention programmes offered.

Our curriculum throughout the school supports our pupils to re engage with education; understand themselves as well as the world in which they live. Pupils access to Outdoor Learning is another unique strength of the academy which gives the students opportunities to learn in a creative manner away from the classroom. We aim, within the context of our small school, still to enable students to undertake Vocational learning, and to access a suite of qualifications. More details below.

Primary

In primary, pupils broadly follow the KS1 and 2 National Curriculum objectives for English and Maths, RHE and the International Primary Curriculum , giving them access to broad learning experiences in a wide variety of subject areas. We use the RWInc and Freshstart SSP programmes to support pupils to learn to read successfully and with fluency, as literacy and communication are a high priority.

Reading is taught through the Read Write Inc Systematic Synthetic Phonics validated programme.

We run a 'rolling programme' where pupils are taught in mixed age classes and remain with us for longer than a Year. Ongoing Assessment helps us to find and support gaps in learning. Careful assessment in Maths and Reading, for example, ensures planning supports the curriculum and pupils receive appropriate teaching according to stage; that pupils in mixed year classes are moved forwards in learning, in Science and History, for example-without repeating content or missing out on conceptual knowledge.

Key Stage 3

We run a 'rolling programme' where pupils are taught in mixed year group classes at Key Stage 3 due to small class numbers, and who may remain with Alternative Provision for longer than a Year. (Though we remain short stay). Our spiral design ensures each pupils receives teaching of the knowledge, understanding and skills within this planning they need from their various starting points. It is flexible and dynamic enough to be able to respond to need in this way- in Maths and Science, for example,-but draws from the National Curriculum. We also offer Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths, as well as Step Up/Entry Level. We are looking to set up Duke of Edinburgh opportunity during 2022.

Child Protection & Safeguarding Policy

Nine Maidens Academy recognises that the safety and welfare of children is paramount and that we have a responsibility to protect children in all of our academy activities. We take all reasonable steps to ensure, through appropriate procedures and training, that all children, irrespective of sex, age, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual identity or social status, are protected from abuse.

We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow procedures to ensure that children and young people receive effective support, protection and justice.

We listen to our pupils and take seriously whet they tell us, children are aware of the adults they can talk to if they have a concern. When there are concerns for a child's welfare, we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies. We will ensure concerns are discussed with parents/.carers first unless we have reason to believe that by doing so would be contrary to the child's welfare.
