Caradon Academy provides education for mainstream pupils who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of permanent exclusion or on an intervention basis. Caradon Academy is based in Liskeard, South East Cornwall; a region that includes some of the most socially and economically deprived rural areas within the county of Cornwall. The academy is a mainstream provision for pupils designated as disengaged. It is most effective when used as an early intervention strategy to re-engage pupils with their learning. Caradon Academy can take up to 40 pupils and is a mixed sex academy for pupils who have been permanently excluded or are on intervention programmes between Key Stage 1 鈥� Key Stage 4. Caradon Academy is inspected as a mainstream provision and as such have to meet Ofsted criteria with regard to attendance, behaviour, attainment and pupil progress. In the last Ofsted inspection (2018) Caradon Academy was rated as 鈥楪ood鈥� by Ofsted outcome.

We work closely with all of the secondary and primary schools within our partnership to ensure the needs of those most vulnerable pupils are met. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of our pupils and staff work extremely hard to ensure pupils are given every opportunity to succeed and aspire. We work closely with a diverse range of outside agencies both statutory and voluntary so that our young people can access the support and guidance they need. At Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 pupils follow a personalised learning programme linked to the national curriculum, whilst at Key Stage 4 pupils will follow a personalised learning programme which is linked to both academic qualifications and/or a vocational route, which can include work experience. The pathway followed by the pupil will be dependent on their educational needs and may include elements of on-line learning.

Pupils access the academy either through permanent exclusion or as a result of being referred to the pupil placement panel or medical pupil referral panel. This panel, made up of local schools, acts as the placement panel for pupils into and out of the academy. It is expected that a pupil in KS2 will access the academy for a maximum of 4 terms, whilst at KS3 a pupil will access the academy for up to a maximum of 3 terms. It is acknowledged that pupils in KS4 may spend the whole of that key stage in an academy.

Haydn Pearse

Principal

Haydn鈥檚 has been in teaching for 18 years. He completed his BSc Combined Hons degree in Physical Education, Sport and Human & Applied Biology in Liverpool. He completed a PGCE at Chester College before going on to teach secondary Physical Education in Worcestershire for several years before relocating to Cornwall. Haydn joined Caradon APA as a PE and PSHE teacher and has enjoyed making a difference with challenging pupils ever since in his role as Vice Principal and now principal. Outside of work Haydn loves Rugby and spending time in the outdoors with his family and dogs.

Pete Nicholls

Vice Principal

Pete has been a teacher for over 20 years, he trained in Chichester completing his B.Ed. in PE. Pete then taught PE in and around Portsmouth for a number of years, becoming a Head of Year and Key Stage manager. He moved to the South West, taking a job at Plymouth Argyle FC, teaching at a study centre delivering the Playing for Success scheme. After this scheme ended Pete joined CAPA and since arriving there he has taught PE then maths before becoming acting Vice Principal. Pete enjoys walking his dog and watching as much sport as he can get away with.

Ali Pearse

SENCO

Ali studied a BA Hons Key Stage 2/3 PE degree at University College Worcester. She then taught across both Primary, Middle and Secondary schools in Worcestershire before moving to Cornwall in 2007. Ali has since qualified as a SENDCO and has been doing this role for 3 1/2 years. Ali loves to be outdoors as much as possible and enjoy gardening, running with her dogs along the amazing Cornwall coastal paths and heading to the North Coast beaches with her family for a spot of body boarding.

Kirsteen Pope

Pastoral Support Manager

Kirsteen has worked with Children, Young People and Families for over 20 years. As a Specialist Careers Adviser and Personal Adviser, she worked in mainstream and special schools. Kirsteen has also been an Early Help Officer, an Attendance Officer and worked as a Senior Professional Youth Worker in many fields, with many years working with Missing Children under the Child Exploitation Agenda, working front line with families from advocacy, guidance sessions to child protection.

As a Trainer, she has enjoyed her eclectic career and is a passionate learner: Post Graduate Diploma in Guidance, Post Graduate Diploma in Youth & Community Work, PG Cert in L&M, Diploma for Personal Advisers, Substance Misuse NVQ & A1 Assessor.

Outside of work, Kirsteen has lived in Scotland, France, Spain, Cyprus and is now living in England. She loves family time with her kids and dog, from crafting to beach fun and forest walks in wellies.

Caradon Academy recognises that the safety and welfare of children is paramount and that we have a responsibility to protect children in all of our academy activities. We take all reasonable steps to ensure, through appropriate procedures and training, that all children, irrespective of sex, age, disability, race, religion or belief, sexual identity or social status, are protected from abuse. We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued. We are alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and follow procedures to ensure that children and young people receive effective support, protection and justice. We listen to our pupils and take seriously whet they tell us, children are aware of the adults they can talk to if they have a concern. When there are concerns for a child's welfare, we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies. We will ensure concerns are discussed with parents/.carers first unless we have reason to believe that by doing so would be contrary to the child's welfare.
